April 28, 2008Baby Raccoon (Chip)
April 28, 2008After seeing those two baby opossums under our deck, it made me think about the baby raccoon that I raised two years ago and the one I also found last year. Here is a picture of one of them. I name her chip because she lived in cedar chips in a nesting box. The chips would be stuck to her fur and on her nose when she would borrow down into them looking for a bit of warmth. So when she would hear me she would make these little clicking noises and stick out her nose to see who was coming. Most of the time cedar chips would be covering her face, it was very cute. I hope she is doing well on her 900 acre wildness where she was released.

Obviously this is the companion piece to white on white.
I painted a Koi today and I may keep it around for awhile. So… you may not see it till I’m sick of it. That way it can’t sell. Sometimes an artist likes to keep a painting around just to look at, and with this painting a day blog I never know which ones will sell so if I want to live with a painting for a while I’ve learned not to post it. With my luck the only painting that will sell that week will be the one I want to keep. Go figure. Anyway… Many of you like my florals so I’ll paint a few more. For years I painted flowers and I studied them, photograph them, their shape, the way their petals turn, the light as it passes thru their leaves all that and more. I don’t usually paint them realistically anymore but on occasion I ‘ll get the old itch to paint some flowers and its usually in the spring.
I hope you enjoy them while they last.

Acrylic on Gessoed Masonite 8 by 8 $50.00
I learned this technique from fellow artist Tim Packer.
This is a new series I’m painting. Basically a pond and some Lilllie’s. I may sneak in a Koi here and there. I will be incorporating my brighter palette …so it will be a la Monet but the colors will be pure Shanti Marie. I hope you check in with me each day to see what I’ve painted, I rarely miss a day (Since August 2006) and if I do I have usually painted a painting but then didn’t have time to post it. Often, falling asleep fully dressed, paint in my fingernails and at least one lab sleeping at my side. After a long day of work and scrambling to paint only to miss my posting deadline. Aghh! Its all worth it! I hope you enjoy my blog and thank you for stopping by. You’ve made it a BIG success with over 600 folks stopping by many days and never fewer than 250 per day. Usually the weekends are slow with Tuesday and Wednesdays being the busy days. I also have a twin blog on blogger which covers the same paintings and I usually have over 150 viewers there each day. I can’t bare to delete one so I continue to post on both sites.
Ripples By Amy Kelm
April 22, 2008watercolor on paper
This is one of the paintings painted by Amy Kelm, she is a Art student just finishing up her Thesis and I wanted to put up some of her work this week. This is a finger print laid over the top of growth rings of a tree. I think the message is basically how we have devalued nature yet our very existence may depend upon how well we manage our natural resources.

April 22, 2008Acrylic on wood panel. 8 by 8 $50.00
I have a thesis student I have been working with and today I ‘m pretty sure her project is complete. She has been painting watercolor paintings using parts of the human body ( like finger prints) juxtaposed or layered over things in nature like the growth rings in a tree. This is to convey our connection to nature and the earth. I’ll post some of her paintings tomorrow. Their interesting and thought provoking.

Today I helped hang a show at the Tega Cay Community Center. The show is a wonderful grouping of paintings from local artists of the Tega Cay Art League. Carena’s coffee shop has closed down so we’ll have to find a new venue for our monthly shows. It’s always difficult for small art groups to find places where there is foot traffic and also a safe place for their paintings to hang.
Artist always have lots of paintings stored and its a shame that these painting have to be under a bed or hidden away in the closet. Most of the time Artists like to sell their paintings but more than that they like to have people see their paintings. They need to be viewed. So I encourage you if you have a business and some decent wall space, allow local artists to utilize the space while giving your customers an interesting view.
