This is a painting that is ready to be glazed. It is completely dry (more than 24 hours) and will accept a new layer of paint very well.
The final finished painting is at the bottom of this post.
This is how the painting looks before I have glazed it. Take a look at the painting and you will be able to see how different a painting can look after glazes have been applied.
You may also see area or shapes of some things which haven’t been painted yet. Some direct painting or glazing with the same color will also need to be done to bring the values in line. Values are difficult to determine unless you can see how all the various colors and glazes effect each other. Often an artist should go back and take a look at anything that has been changed just to make sure that anything that needs tweeking gets tweeked. This means perhaps darkening an area previously thought to be OK.

Above you will see a section of the painting. Look at the light green leaf here in the middle, I will glaze over some burn’t senna and then some green and last some pink which should push the leaf back a bit and look like a shadow.
You can see this in the next photo below.
Under the bright orange leaf there is also an area which is not defined, look at this area and see how it will be redefined by direct painting & glazing.
This photo above shows how I changed the shape of this area (under the large orange leaf).
Next look at the photo below… there was a very light shape which was only painted a light grey blue but was left mostly white. You can also see the blue leaf’s edges (in the corner) was given a blue and purple glaze .

Here is the that same area and you can see it has been painted around (negatively painted ) also a few direct touches help to bring a little critter to life.
Below in the next shot there is an area of the painting I had to grey up a bit while defining the finger like shape. I glazed over this area with Phatho blue.
Then I decided to scumble in some Andrews Turquoise and some Cerulean blue Both are a bit opaque and can be layered rather then glazed. Opaque paint will sit on top of the first layer of paint, in this case the dark blue paint.
This is the right hand lower corner of the painting, You can see I put in various colors as glazes to give the butterfly shape some dimension and I also added some colors to his body for a little more emphasis.

Here is the final painting. Notice I also painted the little vine like branches again so they would stand out against the background. I also glazed the big brown leaf at the right hand bottom corner with bright red so it looks a bit brighter. These things are subtle but often these little tweeks are all a painting needs.

This serene water painting is an Oil painting done on a canvas panel. The size is 24 by 30 and can be purchased for only $400.00. As it’s on a panel it can easily be mailed directly to your home ( continental US) for $5.50 USD.
This painting is part of my ” Tribute to Monet” series, it’s slightly more grayed down than many of my usual more colorful water paintings. I think the warm yellows are set off very nicely by the grayed down blue of the water.

watercolor on paper 4 by 6 inches $40.00 This is part of a series….
I paint this trio often and as I paint them I think of things that the dogs are saying to each other like… “Do you think we should tell him he’s adopted?”

Watercolor on 300 lb paper $100.00 8 by 10 inches
Rembrandt is one of my Koi,& as most of you know, I name my fish after famous artists.
In a letter to Huyghens, Rembrandt offered the only surviving explanation of what he sought to achieve through his art: the greatest and most natural movement.” Whether this refers to objectives, material or otherwise is open to interpretation; either way, Rembrandt seamlessly melded the earthly and spiritual as has no other painter in Western art.
One of my favorite paintings of Rembrandt’s “The Mill”

This Watercolor is 4 by 4, (inches ) A watercolor on gessoboard & is for sale for $30.00 Plus S& H.
I painted this in the deductive manner. That means: I painted it and before it dried I used a wet brush to pulled out the objects from the still damp paint. Then, I allowed it to dry and later filled in the objects with another light glaze of paint. In this case the lighter color of yellow green.

Acrylic on ampersand 8 by 10 75.00
This monocromatic painting is done in a deductive or (negative painting) manner. This is where you paint the entire board with the colors you wish, in this case the mid value, then pull out the lights while also adding the dark. Sometimes you’ll put in some darks and pull out the item either to mid value or to light value. This painting was completed as an exercise we did at Wild Acres. Our instructor was Phil Garett ( SC “Golden” Rep) . We were using the long awaited for… “OPEN” acrylics. Since this technique takes some time to finish, its the perfect opportunity to try these slow drying paints.
You might like to try this little exercise… You don’t have to do anything to the ampersand board it comes ready to go. We went outside and picked up items like flowers or seed pods and used it as a bit of inspiration. I chose leaves because I love fall leaves and always try to paint some each year.
“Negative” painting just means you paint around the object your trying to depict rather than painting the object directly. Usually by using value and color counterpoint to create the illusion of the object. It’s frequenly a technique one does in watercolor and it can be very challenging for some folks because they have to think in terms of whats needed in the background to form the Foreground. I use ampersand a lot but this was also a chance for those folks who don’t paint on this medium to give it a try. If I could afford it, I paint many of my paintings on the stuff. Its fast easy and consistent. It comes in all sizes and can be framed very much likie an oil painting. Of course you can frame it under glass if you wish and they look great either way.

Acrylic on archival mat board 8 by 10, $ 75.00
Its a beautiful day here in SC the kind you wait for all year. Too bad I had to clean out my aquarium, house, pool and do books for most of the day. Maybe tomorrow I’ll go to the lake and let the dogs swim. It may be one of the last times this year for the dogs to swim in the lake. Once it gets cold only one of my dogs will even get into the water.
I planned a play date for them, isn’t it funny to actually have a play date for dogs? Well if you want to get a lot of work done its best to wear them out. It takes a lot to get themso tired they lay down for the rest of the day. Its one way to get things done without having too many winey complaints.
